Whites Bay: The Quiet Corner Piper and I Call Ours

A couple of years ago I stumbled onto a quiet spot just north of Collingwood harbour, out near Cranberry. Back then, before the town fixed the bridge, the only way to reach it was by boat or by wading through the water. That little bit of extra effort was the whole appeal. It felt like a secret only Piper and I were in on.

On warm days I'd bring her out there for our walks, and over time it turned into my retreat. I stashed a couple of chairs in the bushes. Most evenings I'd get a small fire going, crack a beer, and let the quiet do its thing. Piper, naturally, was right beside me, just as happy to have her own little patch of shoreline to patrol.

Why a spot like this matters

I think about this a lot when people tell me why they're moving here. It's rarely just the house. It's the idea that ten minutes from town you can find water, birds, and enough stillness to hear yourself think. Whites Bay isn't on any tour or in any listing, but the fact that places like it exist all around Collingwood is exactly the point.

This is mute swan and heron country. Some mornings the bay is glass. Some evenings the sun drops behind Blue Mountain and lights the whole marsh up gold. You don't have to go far for any of it.

A summer of surprises

This past summer wasn't all quiet mornings, mind you. The spot's gotten a touch more popular, and let's just say I've rounded the bend a few times to find I wasn't quite as alone as I'd planned to be. Piper, for her part, has come trotting back from the reeds with the odd unwelcome souvenir, enough that I keep a closer eye on her out there now.

I'll also admit there's some irony in writing about a secret spot. But it's still the first place we head when a day needs slowing down, and I doubt that changes.

Ten minutes from town you can find water, birds, and enough stillness to hear yourself think. That's the part people fall for.

Come see what I mean

I've spent years getting to know the quiet corners of this area, the kind that never show up in a search filter. If you're thinking about a move to Collingwood or anywhere along the bay and you want someone who actually knows the lay of the land, reach out. Finding people their version of Whites Bay is my favourite part of the job.
